DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint Recipe

I am not a huge fan of chalk - I hate the way it feels. But I still love to create art with the kids in the sunshine so this was a great solution for us! This paint is way more fun and super bright and vibrant when it dries!

Not to mention, super easy to make!

If you have some chalk sitting around, broken or new, you’ll want to give this a try!

First you’ll want to find your chalk pieces and sort them by color into separate containers. I used a muffin tin to do this.

Then, you’ll want to place them in a zip top bag, one color at a time, and use a hammer to crush the chalk into a very very fine powder (super important!) Be careful with those floors! I went into the garage to complete this set because I didn’t want to risk break my tile. You should be able to reuse the bag for each color by cleaning out the dust each time you change colors. But once you get a hole, you’ll need a new bag. I thankfully only had to change my bag out twice for all the colors I used.

Once your powdered chalks are all returned back to their place in your muffin tin, you are going to add 1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp of water to each compartment or for one full size piece of chalk. If it’s too thick add more water, and if it’s way too thin add more chalk powder. Then you’ll want to use a small fine mesh sieve to get any extra chunks that were left behind out of the mix. This is not a required step - but definitely a preference for me because I wanted to chalk paint to be a bit less chunky. Although I will say I tried it without this step at first and once the paint dries on the pavement it still looks fantastic! So if this step sounds like more work than you’d prefer to do for this project, feel free to skip it and you can always sift through it later if you change your mind. No biggie!

Finally you want to add a little cornstarch, for mine I added 1 Tsp to each compartment of my muffin tin and that was perfect! Each of my tins contain about 1 full piece of chalk, for reference.

Now you can go ahead and grab some paint brushes and water cups and head outside for play with your kiddos! I hope this recipe works out as beautifully for you and your family as it did for us! If you have any questions or comments - leave them below!

Stay joyful Momma!

DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint Recipe

Ingredients

  • Muffin Tin (or other preferred containers to separate colors)

  • Chalk pieces, separated by color (approx 1 full piece of chalk per compartment for this recipe. For more chalk, adjust accordingly.)

  • 1 1/2- 2 Tbsp Water per color/ compartment (12-24 Tbsp water for a standard muffin tin)

  • 1 Tsp Corn Starch per color/compartment (12 Tsp total for a standard muffin tin)

  • Fine Mesh Sieve (options, but recommended)

  • Spoon to stir with and also to help push any extra pieces left through fine mesh sieve

Directions

  1. Separate all of your chalk pieces by color in your muffin tin (or other preferred containers) with approx 1 piece of full chalk per compartment. Make sure everything stays super dry!

  2. Add one color at a time to a zip top bag and crush into a fine powder, using a hammer. *Make it as fine as possible! Return to muffin tin. You may need to use more than one bag so make sure you have extras. I tried to reuse it as many times as I could and just wiped it out with my dry hand (keeping everything super dry is a must!) *You can get any extra chunks out later with a fine mesh sieve, but this will make that step a lot easier or even less needed.

  3. Add 1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp water to each compartment and mix

  4. Using a fine mesh sieve, get any extra chunks out. Using a spoon to push it through the sieve helped tremendously with this step. And this is optional but I recommend doing it, because I loved the way it turned out so much more. Some chunks is normal, you just don’t want it to be so chunky that it’s hard to paint with. This step ensures a much more paint-like texture.

  5. Now add 1 Tsp corn starch to each compartment and mix it in.

  6. Get your paint brushes and water cup and go paint something beautiful on the sidewalk with your kiddos! ENJOY!
